With the date of the upcoming presidential election approaching in Afghanistan, there are already signs of challenges for news media in reporting from the election. What are these challenges? And how can these challenges can be tackled? These and other questions were the core issues of a discussion held by media House Balkh.
Fourteen male and female journalists of numerous media organizations, media activists and advocates participated in the discussion. They discussed the challenges potentially facing journalists during the election. Participants argued that one of the challenges is the lack of professionalism among journalists, accepting gifts from candidates and taking side of particular individuals by some media outlets and journalists are some of the issues that journalists commit because of their lack of professionalism and ethical issues which can be strengthened through trainings and education.
Cooperation and teamwork of media organizations was particularly highlighted during the lection. Journalists and media need to mobilize said a participant, adding that it is the responsibility of media organizations to provide ethical trainings for their reporters and journalists.
Media advocacy institutions need to engage with government officials and institutions and speak to them about the important of reporting during the election and the importance of their cooperation with reporters and journalists.
