How to report on Afghanistan’s many conflicts without fueling them? How to contribute to peaceful solutions? How to recognize propaganda and avoid inflammatory language? These topics and more were taught during Mediothek’s most recent workshop on “Conflict Sensitive Reporting”.
15 journalists from Afghanistan’s Southeastern provinces Paktia, Paktika and Khost participated. Trainer was Christine Roehrs, a German journalist and media trainer.
On the last day, two renowned reporters of conflict joined the group. Bilal Sarwary, BBC’s Afghan star reporter, and Ben Farmer, correspondent of Great Britain’s biggest daily newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, discussed with the participants about the challenges to report on conflict in Afghanistan and in other conflict countries and exchanged experiences about how to remain unbiased or stay safe in battle field situations.
The workshop ended with a media networking event in Mediothek’s rose garden. Guests from Kabul’s media scene joined for Afghan music and kebab under the summer sky.
